Penalties

Penalties for late returns

Penalties are applied when books are returned more than 3 working days after the due date.

Suspension
If you return books after the due date you will be suspended from using library services for a period of time proportionate to the amount of time they were returned after the deadline, according to the following methods:

  • from the 4th working day after the due date: 20 day suspension (fixed penalty) + number of days between due date and actual return date. Example: books returned 4 working days after the deadline = 24 days (20 + 4 = 24)
  • the suspension is visible in the Personal Area of the catalogue.
  • If you have several books on loan and have accumulated a different number of overdue days, the suspension is calculated according to the book that was returned the latest.

Fines
As an alternative to suspension, in the Milano libraries you can opt to pay a fine calculated on the basis of the accumulated lateness of your returns, according to the following rules:

  • from the 4th working day after the due date: initial fixed penalty of 2.50 euro + 0.50 euro per day.
  • only working days are counted.
  • this method of calculation is applied to every overdue loan.

    Example:
    1 book returned late by 4 working days: 2.50 euro + 0.50x4 euro = 4.50 euro
    2 books returned late by 4 working days: (2.50 + 0.50x4 euro) + (2.50 + 0.50x4) = 9.00 euro

  • the amount of the fine is visible in the Personal Area of the catalogue.
  • the payment of fines results in the immediate cancellation of the suspension, but only if all late books are returned and all fines have been paid.
  • if you have several books on loan and have accumulated a different number of overdue days, the fine is calculated by summing the single fines relative to each overdue book.
  • you have the option of paying a fine only for loans from Milano campuses' libraries
