Training courses

The University Library Services libraries  offer guidance services and assistance  with bibliographic research through courses on how to use their services and resources.

Registration: write to apre una finestra per invio e-mailbiblio.corsi(at)polimi.it stating your name, surname, person code, School and the course you would like to attend.

Subscriptions close two working days before the date of the course.

The course aims to provide the skills you need to learn the best strategies to find documents on a specific topic using the resources provided by Politecnico and to write respecting copyright. The course will be held in ITALIAN language.

The course is for all students interested in using the digital materials available at TeDOC (vector and raster maps, statistical data).

Contents

  • introduction;
  • description of the data available at TeDOC;
  • CAD data and GIS data;
  • viewing, thematising and querying map and statistics databases;
  • searching for historical and current maps (Italian, European, and non-European).

The course provides a theoretical introduction and practical examples with exercises on data (interrogation, thematising) in a computerized classroom.

Date and time to be defined

The course is open to all students interested in finding out about the procedure for applying theses online. Particular attention will be paid on the steps and procedures necessary for registering theses (mandatory for all Schools since the session of April 2010).


Course objectives:

  • provide an overview of the procedure for registering theses and all its steps
  • present the checklist of activities a student must perform in order to graduate (from the rules for writing theses to registration and deadlines...)
  • enable the student to carry out the entire registration process autonomously

The course must meet a minimum number of participants to be held. If the course does not meet the minimum we will notify you via e-mail once the decision is made, usually two business days prior to the start of your course (Bovisa or Leonardo).

  • How to cite the sources: books, articles, online resources, websites.
  • Citation styles: methods more in use (author-date system ; numbered system)
  • Refworks, a software to manage the bibliography: how to organize and create your own personal archive of bibliographic records; how to format citations  and bibliographies in a wide variety of styles.

If that sounds familiar to you, please come to our training sessions fit for foreign students and you will get an introduction to the tools and services offered by our libraries (like e-journals, e-books, databases, catalogue) and learn how to use them effectively.

The training sessions

The Library Services organize training sessions about the resources available at Politecnico.
The subjects are interesting for students, faculty, researchers and phd students. You can be updated on every tools available to support teaching and research.

Each session lasts about 30 minutes.

The sessions take place at the Bovisa Engineerings Library (third floor, building 28, La Masa Campus) and will be held in Italian.

Send an e-mail to biblio.corsi(at)polimi.it to ask for the weekly schedule (specify the session that you want to attend).

  • "Search" - with a single interface you can search many resources at the same time.
  • Compendex, the most comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database.
  • Lexis Nexis Academic, provides full text and citation access to information covering cover top news, general news topics, and news transcripts; company, industry, and market news; legal news; company financial information, accounting, auditing, and tax information; law reviews; federal case law; U.S. Code; and state legal research.
  • Bibliography, citational styles and RefWorks, a software that allows you to organize and create your own personal archive of bibliographic records.

Courses on demand

The library services offer  faculty the possibility of requesting customised courses for their students. To request a course, you can  consult the list of available  subjects and sub-arguments  to organize  a course that best fits your educational needs.
